European Parliament

It’s not every day that you can set foot in some of the most prestigious buildings in Europe. But now you can.

The brief

The European Parliament represents the democratic process across the European Union, making decisions on behalf of millions of people. But not many are able to see it up close and get a sense of where these history-defining decisions are made.

That’s why ICF Next were approached to develop a holistic journey to bridge that gap, giving young people in Europe the chance to engage with the European Parliament in all its different aspects - with myself helping tackle the overall narrative and content.

The approach

So, how do you package up the full scale of the European Parliament - including its history, impact and other complexities - into one cohesive online experience?

Well, building an immersive 360˚ tour of the Parliament buildings in Europe makes for a good start. I wrote a script for an intro film that kicked off a sweeping tour of heritage and scope, before the tour settled into its first steps with Inga - your digital guide to European Parliament .

From there, it was a careful balance of scripting something that felt tonally right while still conveying the wealth of information surrounding European Parliament. This included helping to pen down some questions for its president - Roberta Metsola - that would give insight into the top position while feeling accessible too.

To help mix up the content and lighten the load on Inga, I also wrote out some hotspot copy to drop into the experience for users to discover along their journey - who doesn’t love a collectable!

The outcome

A deeply engaging resource, translated into 27 languages, used in classroom across Europe with more young people interest in the political landscape.

Running alongside this was a full virtual RPG for classroom learning, allowing young people to experience the legislative process first-hand in an easy-to-grasp format. Who knows, maybe it’ll inspire future MEPs.
